My Expert Awakening…

“She should recover. We just don’t know to what extent and how long it will take.”

There is nothing like a crisis involving your 18 month-old child to completely alter your previous way of thinking – and living.  I knew in the deepest corner of my mind that I could not return to my job where I was dedicated to the needs of children who had been or were at risk of being abused (and their families).  My daughter, who had been struck with a debilitating illness needed me more.

With a combined sense of fear and anticipation, I held on to my position for several months longer before finally saying good-bye to the social work profession.  I jumped into the world of entrepreneurship. It wasn’t completely new to me. You see, the entrepreneur life had been screaming at me for the past 10 years.

During the early months of her recovery, my entire being was devoted to all of the physical and occupational therapy that  took place as a day patient at a children’s rehabilitation facility. Several months later, her therapy progressed to home-based services. Greater freedom offered opportunities for me to delve deeper into the start of my business. I invested in online training, coaching and home study programs while the books were arriving from Amazon in multiples of 5-10 at a time.I thought that I was enjoying every moment of my 10-12 hour days until I paused just long enough to acknowledge that the desired flexibility and availability that had initiated this venture was no where in sight. I was working longer hours, experienced more restrictions to my lifestyle, and the financial outcome was a mere fraction of my previous $80,000./year salary. What was this all for anyway?

I started to look around at the most recognized people who were regular speakers for successful series/events. They were working hard on their businesses and guess what? Not one person said that they found a magic potion that guaranteed their success.
